Dortmund Tournament    June 2-4

Flames take bronze in Dortmund
After going the whole season without a win, the Flames arrived in Dortmund with no expectations. Finishing fifth in last year's tournament gave the Flames some encouragement heading in this year's contest.

The Flames began their tournament with a bang, pounding the Hamburg Renegades 11-2. Steve Jarnet pitched brilliantly limiting the Renegades to just 2 runs over four innings. The game was close up until the bottom of the third when the Flames erupted for 8 runs putting the game away.

The Flames were on a high after their first win, they continued to steamroll their neext opponents thanks to the Flames offence so accustomed to winning in previous seasons.

Josh Scuby led the hit parade with three hits while driving in five runs.

With the Flames having a perfect start to the competition, they were guaranteed a semi-final spot. They played a much superior team in the Haarlem 'Globetrotters', the second place team from the Dutch Baseball League. Their powerful hitting was too much for first-time pitcher Nik Patterson and the Richmond Flames.

The Flames' semi-final game matched them up against the Speyer Turtles from Germany who craftily beat the Flames in last year's tournament. Hoping to get to their first tournament final in the organization's history, the Flames fell short when the Turtles blew things open in the last inning.

In their final game, the Flames regrouped and trounced the Haarlem 'B' team 13-2 in a masterful display of strong fielding and timely hitting. Greg Blair's home run led the way for the Flames while Nigel Stephens' excellent double play led a flawless defense.

The win provides third-place finish at the tournament and shines a light in anotherwise losing season for the Richmond Flames.
